Best Ever Gingersnaps

1 cup sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
3/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg, slightly beaten

Combine 1 cup sugar, flour, salt, soda, and spices;  stir lightly.  Cut in shortening to resemble course crumbs.  Stir in molasses and egg.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls and roll in sugar.  Place on ungreased baking sheet;  bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Remove baking sheets immediately.  Cookies will firm quickly as they cool.

Yield:  About 4 1/2 dozen
